About

Sarasota Power is an informal group of citizens of Sarasota that are requesting the Sarasota City Commissioners to exhaust all possibilities of becoming their own utility prior to signing a new franchise agreement with Florida Power and Light.

  1. The fact is that the 2010 Florida Legislative Session failed to pass any comprehensive Energy Policy Legislation for Florida this year. This leaves our state lagging terribly behind many other States in creating a clean energy environment and the many job opportunities that would have been created by it. Florida’s struggling economy can’t wait.

It is now more important than ever before that every opportunity to create a clean energy economy be taken seriously by Floridians who must respond with citizen activism through municipal and county policies, ballot referendums, and other forms of Public action to see this vital topic be addressed now.

Florida’s utilities and other major commercial and industrial polluters must have clear directives from Floridians as to how they must conduct themselves in the future. Sarasota may now have some tremendous timely opportunities in considering its franchise renewal with FPL as an opening for significant progress for our area. Let’s get involved in the dialog!

  2. True change in politics is made at the local level. Revolutions don’t start at the top, they start with small groups of folks who are dedicated to make postive change for themselves and their neighbors. Person by person, city by city, true change for the good of the people is made BY the people, not for them.

The status quo of FPL’s monopoly and their ability to dictate unwavering terms has been such an accepted part of life in Florida, and it is truly inspiring to see Sarasota stand up and fight for their independence and their ability to generate energy of all types on their own terms.

Hats off to you Sarasotians, the eyes of the State and the renewable energy world are upon you!

  3. Hello, I am visiting my family who live in Sarasota, FL. I just read about your group in “The Observer”. For an introduction, I am a wind energy entreprenuer based in Bangalore, India.

I am of the opinion that the city can go in for it’s own independent power source, which will turn out to be much cheaper than the current options before it.

The option i suggest to Sarasotans is to go in for a Combined Cycle Natural Gas power system. A new technology, called “Integrated Solar Combined Cycle” can be integrated into this gas power system. The additional heat provided by Solar will reduce gas consumption per unit (kWh).

    These are my pro-bono suggestions.
